Now maybe the much maligned replay unit on P4 was a side effect of this design style but the DEC guys came up with something similar too if I'm not mistaken for their high perf Alpha designs. So other smart people were definitely trying similar techniques besides the P4 team. There's a MICRO or ISCA paper that claims the optimal pipeline stage is something like 6 to 8 FO4 which is significantly more aggressive than the P4.
Now one can counter that hyperpipeling was never going to pan out but there was a lot of research outside Intel well into the mid-2000s looking at deeply pipelined machines.
The trace cache on P4 was refined as the loop cache on Conroe, uop cache and explicitly renamed register file showed up in Sandy Bridge, and SMT reappeared on Nehalem. Not all of them panned out when they were realized in P4 but were refined successfully later on. For example, the trace cache on the P4 came from Jim Smith's and his students at the University of Wisconsin. Many of these ideas originated outside Intel - in particular, from the academic community. That's not really fair - Willamette (P4) productized a lot interesting ideas.
